Tubing Mascara – the one that doesn’t smudge!

by | Oct 4, 2021 | MAKEUP

Well, so they say!

In all honesty, they are a solid category of mascaras. Don’t know what I’m talking about?….what do I mean by tubing?! Keep on reading then; I will explain it all…

Mascara is one of those products we always have our eyes open for something even better…something that will make our lashes pop like falsies, stay lifted, won’t smudge and be easy to remove! Is that too much for a girl to ask for?

Well, let me introduce you to Tubing or Tubular Mascara, calming never to smudge and slide off your lashes when you’re ready to say go bye.

They do work just like that almost, except in the combination of EXTREME humid climates (aka Hong Kong) and deep-set eyes where your lashes hit the brow bone (aka my eyes). So for me in summer, I have to opt for full waterproof mascara in the summer months. But leading up to having to rely on waterproof, I tested loads of tubbing mascara’s!

So what are the differences between regular mascara and tubing mascara?

Regular mascara is painted on with pigment and coats your lashes, with various outcomes of length and thickness. Waterproof mascaras are the same, but the formula is resistant to water and stays on well but requires more time and effort to remove at night.

The tubing formulas have an entirely different formulation. They contain polymers that wrap around each lash and create a tube. You will understand this more after the first time you wash your face; you’ll see the tiny ‘tubes’ coming off (or see the cover image of this article above! ). It does look a little like your eyelashes but don’t fear tubing mascaras are very gentle. In fact, you only need some light warm water, and they slide off; this is the best part about tubing!

Tubing mascaras are great at lengthening because of the nature in the way they wrap around the lashes, less is excellent at adding volume.

How to know if a mascara is tubing?

It’s not as easy as you may think; I have experienced, on multiple occasions, going into stores asking if they have any tubing mascara in their range to receive blank faces looking back at me.

Packaging is not quite as direct as the waterproof styles, often with the small blue font for those clearly saying ‘waterproof’. I find I have to do research online to see if it’s a true tubing formula. They are often called something along the lines of smudge-proof or film-forming.

You do find them in the drug store / high street and all the way up to the high-end brands.  Enjoy trying them out.

Here are just a few of the good ones out there in varying price ranges, worth a try.
